Some Good Advice To Consider When Starting A New Job

In Collaboration With Deloitte Malta

Ok, so you’ve nailed the job interview and you’ve got the job, but the real challenge starts when you walk in for your 1st day at the workplace.

It can feel intimidating because you don’t know anyone & you’re not 100% sure what you’re walking into, but feeling nervous is normal.

Just keep your cool & ask questions when you don’t understand something. Remember, your colleagues & employer want to help you adjust.

1. Leave A Good Impression 🤗

Since you’ll most likely not know anyone at the workplace, you don’t want to start off on the wrong foot. Instead, take this as an opportunity to put your best foot forward & make a good impression. This will set the tone for the rest of your time within the company. Just be yourself & calm those nerves!

Also, you should avoid being late on your 1st day - that will definitely leave a bad impression.

2. Be Open To Learning 🤓

Since you’re new to the job, it’s only natural that you won’t know what to do & will have to learn a lot of new stuff. There will be a different system, different office culture & different workload.

So, you will feel overwhelmed at times during your 1st few weeks BUT it will only get easier with time. The more you put yourself out there & try, the more you’ll adjust. Trust the process & just go with it.

3. Be Organised 📝

Every job will have a list of tasks that you’ll need to get done in a certain amount of time. At first, your performance will be slow because you’re still getting the hang of everything, but you’ll quickly improve.

What’s important is to stay organised & focused. You won’t get overwhelmed or waste time by keeping track of your tasks & their deadlines.

Side note: Some tasks do take more time to complete, while urgent tasks need tackled immediately. So it’s important to learn how to prioritise!

4. Work-Life Balance Is Important 😌

You’re going to spend a lot of your time working & being at the workplace, so make sure to switch off when your shift is over & you’re out of the office. Work is not everything! If there’s something not urgent that needs to get done, then it can wait until tomorrow.

And avoid taking any work issues home with you. Those belong at the workplace, so learn to leave them there.

When you’re at home or out enjoying your time outside of working hours, make sure you take a break & recharge. Watch some TV, listen to music or go for a walk. Let loose.

5. Communicate 🗣️

When working with different people at the workplace, you have to learn to communicate. Most of the time, it's not what you say that matters but how you say it.

It’s important to always be respectful & avoid lashing out when you are trying to address a problem. Be calm & collected - say what you need to say in a reasonable way.

Read, Set, Go!

So, starting a new job is not always easy when it comes to adjusting, but it’s an experience that will help you grow.

Remember, the employer saw potential in you - they didn’t just randomly hire & there was a reason they picked you over everyone else.

Take it easy & go with the flow. Do your best every day & don’t get discouraged.
